Flannery OConnor - 1111 Words
Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor When writing a piece of literature the content is often influenced from the background of the person who is writing. The author, whether consciously or subconsciously, adds in personal experiences or beliefs into their pieces. Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor is a good example of this trend. Her short stories illustrate the hardships, beliefs, and society at the time she lived and was writing. It is most blatantly demonstrated in her collection of short stories entitled, A Good Man Is Hard to Find, and Other Stories. Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor reflects her disease, in the mutilation of her characters, her religion, in the types of characters she chooses, and her being an outcast of society, in her charactersââ¬â¢ traits, throughout the plots ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Another aspect of her life infiltrated her stories as well. All her life, Oââ¬â¢Connor was always an outcast. When she was young she lost her dad, making it just her mother and herself in the family. In her childhood she was a Catholic in the South which was mainly populated with Protestants. And later in life she was crimpled and on crutches way before the expected age to become dependent on others. All of these are not common occurrences, making her different from the rest of society. After she was on crutches, Oââ¬â¢Connor once said, ââ¬Å"I write every day for at least two hours, she told in an interview, and I spend the rest of my time largely in the society of ducks,â⬠(Liukkonen). She never quite fit in with society. This is also the case with many of the characters in her story. Most noticeable this is the case with the Polish farmer found in her story, ââ¬Å"The Displaced Person.â⬠He was a foreigner who came over to America. He was feared by the other employees on the farm. It was such an extreme case that it caused complete turmoil on the farm. The Polish farmer ended up being killed by a tractor with several onlookers, none of whom spoke up to save him. This shows that society is unwilling to take in people who are different from them. Oââ¬â¢Connor experienced this first-hand while growing up, most notably because she was Catholic and her world around her was not Catholic. Punishment in the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Hebrew Bible Free Essays
Not everyone has the same idea in mind about punishment, and nor did other countries from other times. The following books: The Iliad, The Odyssey, and The Hebrew Bible, entitling instances of cheating, kidnapping and murder, insulting and their punishment. Very rarely would you get away with something unseen because the Gods saw everything, and they could do just about anything known on earth to mankind or even to each other. We will write a custom essay sample on Punishment in the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Hebrew Bible or any similar topic only for you Order Now Anything was punishable whatever time ear it was, and the Gods would cease the chance to take seeked revenge upon another. In many of the Greek based books, there was a lot of cheating going on. In the Hebrew Bible, there are severe punishments for cheating. In book I of The Iliad, Agamemnon had stated: ââ¬Å"the daughter of Chryses. I have set my heart on keeping her in my own house, for I love her better even than my own wife Clytemnestra, whose peer she is alike in form and feature, in understanding and accomplishments. â⬠In this statement, Agamemnon rathers Breisis, over his very wife because she is similar in looks, therefore would cheat instead of going back to his wife over some foolish love for a girl! Within the Odyssey, book III, one example is about how Nestor explains to Telemachus, ââ¬â ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ ut we were over there, fighting hard at Troy, and Aegisthus who was taking his ease quietly in the heart of Argos, cajoled (consoled? ) Agamemnonââ¬â¢s wife Clytemnestra with incessant flattery. â⬠In the Hebrew bible, it states, Leviticus 20:10 ââ¬Å"If a man commits adultery with another manââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬âwith the wife of his neighborâ â¬âboth the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death. â⬠So if caught cheating, followed by what the Hebrew bible says to do, you will be put to death. So if you are the one putting someone to death for adultery, doesnââ¬â¢t that make you the murder? To take away a living beingââ¬â¢s life? Throughout the Iliad and the Odyssey, there are many points where women are given as prizes. So if the women are given as a prize, is it counted as cheating? In the Iliad, punishment to Agamemnonââ¬â¢s adulterous wife, Agamemnon kills her. In the Odyssey, Clytemnestra tries to take her love, Aegisthus for revenge. Soon enough, he is also put to the death, and she as well. In the Hebrew bible, one quote that represents well is Deuteronomy 22:22 ââ¬Å"If a man is found sleeping with another manââ¬â¢s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. So the average punishment for adultery, or cheating, was the death penalty. Kidnapping was also a big theme in the Iliad, in which Breisis, daughter of the priest Apollo, was kidnapped by Agamemnon, whom professes his love for her and does not want to give her up for life itself. Helen to was kidnapped by Paris, in order to fulfill their love, but making things worse. In the Odyssey, Persephone is kidnapped by Hades, and brought to the underworld six months of the year. s Exodus 21:16: ââ¬Å"Anyone who kidnaps another and either sells him or still has him when he is caught must be put to death. â⬠So is there a pattern for death at this time back then? Yes, indeed! In the Iliad, many people like Ajax the greater and Ajax the lesser and Agamemnon both insult Achilles for not fighting, but then Achilles also takes his prize of Breisis. Being insulted was part of the shame culture and many of the men would rather die than shame their village or family. In the Odyssey, book XVIII, Cachedà ââ¬âà SimilarYou +1ââ¬â¢d this publicly. Undo after suffering enough insults from the servant-girl: Melantho, Odysseus is taunted by Eurymachus, who also hurls a footstool, though missing. Insulting could get charges put on them. When you have insulted someone, due to what the Hebrew bible says, they are to be stoned to the death, even for the first offense. Punishment pretty well was all the same in the Hebrew bible, with even the first violation being stoned to death, but also anything that may not even be a violation tied together with another one. They all come out with the same outcome of death, usually stoning. In the Iliad, many of the punishments too were death, and so to also in the Odyssey. Between these three books, they had just a different timing on things. Now days with cheating or adultery, it is taken pretty well lightly. Kidnapping is still yet not light, but it is taken more serious to find the kidnapped. Insults even now these days doesnââ¬â¢t compare with how minor they may be to any of these books, because they were not taken lightly, but in todayââ¬â¢s society, things like that are okay. Comparative Business Ethics and Social Responsibility OR Stakeholder
Questions: 1. Which is the national advertising division's most important stakeholder, businesses or consumers? 2. Do you believe the BBB can be truly impartial given its financial dependence on business? 3. What actions would you take to ensure an ethical misconduct disaster such as the pay-for-pay scheme does not happen again? Answers: Introduction: Within the United States, the National Marketing Division, Better Business Bureau is quite renowned as a self-regulatory trade association. The key objective of this association is developing an environment where all buyers as well as sellers grow mutual trust. The organization is one of the most effective watchdog groups that introduces a famous scheme called pay for play. Here in the scheme, rating A is given to individuals for paying membership fees(Fischer, 2004). Rating F is given to individuals as a penalty to those who do not pay. The rating shows that it would not be worth for the clients and may be identified as misleading. This is related to lack of honesty as well as trust, and that anyone may lodge complaints against the operations of Better Business Bureau. All operations of the organization are financed by the fees that business firms usually pay during enrolment (Ibrahim, Angelidis and Howard, 2006). Most ethical aspects arise on account of the financial influences wit hin the rating framework. Thus, this report would analyze the ethical aspects as well as misconducts pursued by the organization Better Business Bureau (BBB), along with the impacts upon the organizational stakeholders. Besides, it would also recommend of mitigating unethical practices that often lead to negative outcomes of all stakeholders. Involved Stakeholders: Stakeholders are the elements who get influenced whether directly or indirectly in positive or negative manner by organizational decisions. Stakeholders usually involve organizational employees, shareholders, employers, customers, government, suppliers, community, and ecosystem. For Better Business Bureau, commonly all renowned organizations have definite set of policy related to payment of membership fees for joining the association(Korhonen, 2003). This would be in order to generate advantages of increased rating within comparing with other businesses. It has been identified that the scheme of pay to play has a negative outcome upon the businesses. The unreliable procedure of rating of the firm confirms higher ratings to firms that pay fees and low ratings to the ones that have not paid. For non-accredited business, rating process is quite significant (Matten and Moon, 2004). The process of rating impacts the purchase decisions of the clients. The scheme has impacted upon the clien ts in selection of the accredited business instead of non-accredited ones. As a result, non-accredited firms lose their customers despite offering enhanced quality of products and services. This organization Better Business Bureau needs some business firms as joiners for providing improved services to customers. From evidences it is clear that the association may not successfully develop trust in absence of active participation from business firms. Thus, naturally business organizations are essential stakeholders of BBB. As identified, BBB has formed a developed platform whereby customers may easily access the organizational website without paying any fees. The clients may check out all ratings of organizations accredited by BBB. It is important to note that clients usually rely on BBB more than that if the Federal Trade Commission. Organizations increasingly support BBB for enhancing their brand image as well as recognition. When clients do not attach adequate importance to BBB, the organizations would not invest anymore upon BBB. Thus, it may be said that clients are the most important stakeholders of Better Business Bureau. Ethical considerations enable confirmation of the correctness or misdirection of specific firms that operates freely irrespective of the stakeholder liabilities. Market orientation may be thought as an important portion of marketing approaches (Matten and Moon, 2004). However, the roles and responsibilities of the clients within improvements of ethical activities and even in social obligation are yet dicey. Business organizations participate in competitive market, and thus market orientation as well as consumer focus are identified as key factors to determine performances of market activities. Excessive competition promotes business organizations for adopting unethical practices (Moore and Jie Wen, 2008). When BBB generates unjustified rating, clients often get misguided. They become more interested in paying for some items or services which a licensed business may provide as compensation for the paid amount to Better Business Bureau for increasing cost. The key responsibility of the organization is to impart strengthening legal protection to clients. This would be supportive in developing mutual expectation. This also builds trust and help in dealing fairly. The model of Moral Management states that ethical code of conduct, legal orientation, and organizational objectives are key factors that contribute in maintaining ethical standards in case of customers. As per this model, management must emphasize upon achieving success by means of ethical practices. Thus, ethical leadership is very important. This approach supports organization in identifying most preferred direction of all organizational activities. This model emphasizes upon adopting ethical standards since this acts as an integral strategy, thereby ensuring organizational success. Ethical values are helpful in restructuring management and also providing opportunities to make effective decisions. Besides, these develop an effective system within the organizations (Moore and J ie Wen, 2008). The organization Better Business Bureau should stress on ethical issues to create a rating framework. Such an integrated method of BBB would support organization in choosing common point of references and impart better services. This manner would improve the rating system of BBB. Better Business Bureau: Is it partial? This organization has confronted some key controversial matters relating to its rating policies. Major concerns about ethics have impacted its reputation as well as recognition. A controversy started while a renowned restaurant named Ritz Carlton Hotel got F rating from BBB, though it never received complaints. All clients were quite confused since they could not make out how can such a famous restaurant gets poor rating like that(Schaefer, 2007). Later, it was identified that all organizations paying higher charges to the association received a higher rating. Also, companies not paying any charge to the association received poor ratings. This led to severe criticisms of Better Business Bureau. The concept of pay for play was quite fraudulent in nature that rates higher for money. This unethical practice of BBB was severely criticized. The customers were misguided thoroughly. This occurred at the Los Angeles branch of BBB. Thus, many firms lodged complaints against the unfair rating system. Another concerning issue was identified with BBB. They were quite friendly with the business firms. When clients lodge complaints against the association, BBB asked clients to fill up some additional information within the complaint form(Shaw, 2008). Thus, these were sold to the organizations for helping them identify all their weaknesses to work upon those. Customers were quite upset with behavior of BBB. Besides this, it was also identified that the association was engaged in partnership with other firms to ensure profit for both. As per non-accredited organizations, BBB avoided the organizations that did not pay charges. It had completely ignored the ethical responsibilities. This had affected its reputation by lowering its value towards customers (Shi and Sun, 2014). On analyzing important issues of BBB, it was identified that stakeholders need to be emphasized immensely by the association. Theory of stakeholders helps management of any firm to facilitate investigation for identifying best suited approach to fit organizations firmly in the environment. Also, it enables identification of work mechanisms that creates positive impacts upon the stakeholders. As per the theory of Freeman, avoiding stakeholders is an unethical practice and leads to negative impacts upon the firm (Trong Tuan, 2012). On other side, concept of corporate social responsibility identifies four major areas: economic, legal, social, and ethical responsibility. As per the theory, the firm must emphasize upon achieving profit by means of corporate activities in ethical manner. Certainly, BBB did not succeed in this matter. Revenues for BBB are generated from fees of membership that are gathered from organizations interested in. The association does not receive any funds from governmental agencies. Again, the association also lags in the area of legal responsibilities. This would mean that organizations need to adhere to legal rules and regulations that BBB does not. This enables building of trust amidst customers and stakeholders. It failed to maintain any particular procedure of rules or regulations (Whelan, 2013). The branch of BBB had reduced personnel expenses that excluded any sort of rudiments which will allow the association to judge right complaints of businesses. Several firms have faced the consequences of decisions taken by unprofessional personnel. Besides, factor of ethical responsibility that deals with incorporating right things ensure success of BBB. This reflects the cultural side of the firms. As per this theory, business must be perceived as societal citizen by BBB but it lacked transparency. Also, quality was a concern in case of BBB. This had created a lot of trust issue amidst the customers. The association had built a highly confusing rating system in its environment. Also, complaint system was defective in nature since clients could hardly read out issues. This led to enough confusion about its genuineness. Recommendations about ethical misconduct: The key issues with the rating system pay for play framework of BBB is that of selling of membership. It forms an ethical misconduct on behalf of the association. To ensure that such misconduct is not repeated, the association must emphasize on four key factors effectiveness, context, values, and leadership (Bures, 2014). Practicing ethical issues must be guided by definite values. Some employees of BBB had agreed to counteract the greedy acts and breaking of laws. Thus, understanding organizational ethics is very important. Ethical considerations enable confirmation of the correctness or misdirection of specific firms that operates freely irrespective of the stakeholder liabilities. Market orientation may be thought as an important portion of marketing approaches. However, the roles and responsibilities of the clients within improvements of ethical activities and even in social obligation are yet dicey. Further, as perceived by leaders, all employees at BBB lacked in decision-making skills and leadership skills(Attig and Cleary, 2014). Business leaders need to be effective in their communication and managing skills for motivating others to pursue ethical standards. Some of the employees at BBB who have earlier broken the laws at the association were made to pay penalties for that. Although the association had followed increased idealistic beliefs as well as standards, it failed to support the company. So, following improved standards, giving rewards to the customers, and bestowing with penalties may hel p BBB in improving ethics. The association needs to ensure that it is thoroughly aware of all ethics related practices within BBB environment (Bures, 2014). For preventing misconducts within BBB and assuring no existence of confusion amidst customers regarding the scheme of pay for play, it must adopt some key measures: It must create a favorable workplace policy that must align with company philosophy, mission statement, and code of conduct. Utilizing the policy of the association along with management performance to hold employees accountable for deeds and acknowledge them about roles in professional standards. Effective feedback may help BBB in confirming successful ethical practices(Debeljak and Krkac, 2008). BBB must introduce training sessions to train employees about workplace ethics that may enable them to stay aware of the organizational ethics. The association may lose huge opportunities of business if it fails to abide by the rules and regulations. BBB may implement confidential hotlines that would enable employees to communicate with the management whenever any misconduct is witnessed internally. This may restrict the practice of unethical behavior (Alnder, 2011). It may apply developed workplace policy on a constant basis to address ethical aspects associated to workplace. BBB needs to communicate its ethical expectations to every employee level from top to bottom and this can ensure that all employees are well aware of the ethical standards of the association (Whelan, 2013). BBB needs to manage risks proactively. It must introduce an effective reporting system which would support examining of issues which BBB faces in its environment. It may even use the six sigma process for making the reporting system highly effective. It needs to confirm that every reporter responsible for specific task gives authentic details. Also, it may select third party vendor to ensure reliable resources. Conclusion: As conclusion, reports describe all ethical matters faced by BBB on account of unethical system of rating. It states that the scheme of pay for play proved to be unethical for clients and businesses. For resolving these issues, it is necessary to understand the wants and objectives of the related stakeholders. The report also focuses on important stakeholders of NAD division, both customers that were indirect stakeholders and that of the businesses that were direct stakeholders (Shi and Sun, 2014). As a myth it is believed that BBB processes were impartial other than the scheme of pay for play that created discrimination amidst accredited as well as non-accredited business by means of collecting fees. It has been identified that the scheme of pay to play has a negative outcome upon the businesses (Whelan, 2013). The unreliable procedure of rating of the firm confirms higher ratings to firms that pay fees and low ratings to the ones that have not paid. For non-accredited business, rat ing process is quite significant. The process of rating impacts the purchase decisions of the clients(Attig and Cleary, 2014). The scheme has impacted upon the clients in selection of the accredited business instead of non-accredited ones. On other side, concept of corporate social responsibility identifies four major areas: economic, legal, social, and ethical responsibility. As per the theory, the firm must emphasize upon achieving profit by means of corporate activities in ethical manner. Certainly, BBB did not succeed in this matter. Also, quality was a concern in case of BBB. This had created a lot of trust issue amidst the customers. The association had built a highly confusing rating system in its environment. Also, complaint system was defective in nature since clients could hardly read out issues. This led to enough confusion about its genuineness. References Alnder, M. (2011). Andrew Carnegie Essay Example
Andrew Carnegie Essay Example Andrew Carnegie Essay Andrew Carnegie Essay The rise of capitalist economy was characterised by development and chance. Opportunities. if taken at the opportunity. enabled work forces to entree wealth. Andrew Carnegie is the perfect illustration of an enterpriser and adult male who built the roots of American substructure. He can besides lived the perfectââ¬â¢ American dream. He has a typical rags to richesââ¬â¢ narrative. which makes him a historical icon and an admirable adult male. Carnegie is known to hold built a luck on steel. However. the ways in which he made money could be considered an maltreatment to moralss and moral rights. Toward the terminal of his life. Carnegie decided to utilize his wealth for the greater good of the community and encouraged acquisition. For the above grounds. he can be considered as a robber baron. but I believed that he besides worked for the greater good of human nature. Carnegie was able to take chances to make a huge luck. He came from perfectly nil. but is known as a captain of industry. He monopolised wealth. conveyance and substructure. He was born in Scotland in 1835. His household migrated to America in 1848 when he was 13. As a immature male child. he worked in a cotton mill in Pittsburgh. He did non hold many old ages of schooling nor accompanied university but he became the richest adult male on the planet during the industrial revolution. In this sense. he is the embodiment of the American Dream. One of Carnegieââ¬â¢s expressions ; The foremost adult male gets the oyster. the 2nd gets the shell explains his calling to the full. Carnegie had the ability to place and prehend chances. to anticipate what would go on to industries and to take hazards. He besides stated that ; people who are unable to actuate themselves must be content with averageness no affair how impressive their other talents demo his ambition. Carnegie was non content with platitude. His ability to prehend chances and invest in them helped greatly his calling. He saw possible in cabling and conveyance. While he was working in the railway industry. in 1859. he saw a connexion between steel and substructure. Carnegie grabbed the chance and created a successful steel company. a great illustration of capitalist development. Carnegieââ¬â¢s steel company. Carnegie Steel. which opened near Pittsburgh in the 1870s. is an illustration development during the rise of capitalist economy. Carnegie created employment. The manner he ran his company can be believed to be an maltreatment of work force and human capacities. His workplace was similar to modern twenty-four hours sweatshops. He made work forces work hard. They had long hours. twelve hours per twenty-four hours. six yearss per hebdomad. in highly hapless working conditions. Because steel was in demand at the clip. due to the promotions in steam engines. Carnegie decided to maintain costs low to pull more people. However that meant that he kept his workersââ¬â¢ rewards low every bit good. This resulted in violent labor work stoppage in 1892. Carnegie ever preached for rights of workers and brotherhoods. However his actions did non fit his rhetoric. A major work stoppage at Carnegie Steel was a clang between capitalist economy and workersââ¬â¢ brotherhoods. It was bloody and violent. It lasted five month. During that clip Carnegie went to Scotland and left the companyââ¬â¢s general director. Henry Clay Frick in charge. 300 Pinkerton armed guards were posted around the mill and 10 work forces were killed. Carnegieââ¬â¢s merely manner out of this quandary was to sell his mill. He sold it to J. Pier Morgan. for $ 480 million. in 1901. Andrew Carnegie turned his calling from capitalist economy to philanthropy. When Carnegie sold his steel company to Morgan. he became the richest adult male on earth . said Morgan the twenty-four hours he bought the company. In 1889. Carnegie had published an essay. in which he stated that. the rich have a moral duty to administer their money in ways to advance the public assistance and felicity of the common man . He besides said that. the adult male who dies rich therefore dies disgraced . During his life he gave off more than $ 350 1000000s. Carnegie supported instruction and reading. He donated money to 2500 libraries around the universe. The peculiar thing about Carnegieââ¬â¢s altruist calling is that he did non merely desire to assist people ; he wanted to assist others assist themselves. He gave away his money for the betterment of world. For illustration. giving money off to libraries alternatively of people allowed mankind educate themselves. Consequently. instruction became easier to entree for everyone. Carnegie became one of the most celebrated altruists. a complete antonym to the adult male whom exploited people in his mill. Andrew Carnegie was both a robber baron and a altruist. In my sentiment. he worked for the greater good of human nature. He was a adult male who took chances to do his calling. every bit good as giving other chances. Even though he exploited people. and the on the job conditions in his steel mill are an illustration of that. he offered them occupations. and a manner to do money for their households. I agree that in the terminal he helped others to assist themselves . His monolithic contribution of $ 350 1000000s shows his alteration of bosom towards the terminal of his life. As Carnegie. grew up in a hapless societal category. I believe that he wanted to give others similar chances as he strived for. Giving them a opportunity for instruction and free entree to libraries. The 1000000s of dollars that he donated gave others a opportunity to better their lives. I believe that Andrew Carnegie is a adult male to be remembered as one whom sought better world.

Sea level rise in the Mediterranean Sea and Mallorca Island Essay
Sea level rise in the Mediterranean Sea and Mallorca Island - Essay Example The answers to these questions can be given in a twofold criteria and include the change in the estuarine geodatum caused as a result of the flow of melt water from the glaciated lands across the globe into the sea. Consequently, thermal expansion of the upper layers of the sea water caused by the decrease in water density due to its warming leading to the rise in the sea levels (Szabados, 2002). The occurrences of these situations within the earthââ¬â¢s geographical landscape usually lead to varied rise in the sea levels in some areas and a fall in certain areas. Another cause for the changes in the level of the seawater is the rising or uplifting of the lands close to the sea. This often causes the decline in sea levels in some regions though to a limited extent. Sea level rise is of recent times has resulted in very great concern to the global community as environmental conservation issues is a global phenomenon and is of global concern. According to the statistics taken by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) using the satellite images, the global sea levels have been rising tenderly at an average rate of about 3mm per year from 1993 to 2007 (IPCC, 2007). This report highlights the various effects of the continued rise in sea level within the global context. This report will also look at the changes in the sea level in the Mallorca and the Mediterranean regions of the world, their causes and consequences on the adjacent lands as well as the extent of the influences on the coastal communities around the mentioned areas. Mallorca is a small island in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain that has been characterized by a number of notable cases of sea level change. Studies by Jeffrey Dorale shows that the sea level was about one meter above the levels that reached 81000 years ago indicating a positive deviation in the in the level of the sea waters. The rise in the levels as he argues is brought about by the rapid melting of ice aroun d the globe. The ice water consequently finds its way into the sea thereby raising the water levels by about one meter for every fifty years (Jieffrey, 2010). The observable results of this rise in the levels of the Mediterranean Sea are seen as a spillover effect in the communities surrounding the sea. Most of the communities that were once living closer to the sea have retreated by about sixty miles away from the coastline as much of the land has been submerged under the seawaters. Moreover, Barnetti (2005) argues that the formally dry lands adjacent to the Mediterranean regions have now been covered under water thereby continuously diminishing the amount of cultivatable lands in these regions and the consequent migration of people out of these areas (Barnetti, 2005). Geography has evolved as a more organized subject of study that uses different methodological approaches in understanding various observed geographical phenomena. On one hand, physical geography adopts a scientific a nd rational approach while on the other hand human geography relies heavily on descriptive techniques in examining the relationship between complex human factors and their influence on geographical environment. The scientific approach has been adopted widely in the study of physical geography based on observation, precise scientific experience and sound precision and measurements of the geographical phenomena. As such, the Mediterranean region has been experiencing constant shifts in its climatic characteristics contributed mostly by the wide variation in the
